GMP has always prided itself on providing a wide range of high-power and high-performing cable cutters. Whether you need a cable cutter for telecommunications work or a cutter for power industry work, GMP has the right tool to do the job well. This blog, the first in a two-part series, covers the best cutters specifically designed for telecommunication work. A second blog in the series will cover the best cutters for power industry work at a later date.

The GMP Ratcheting Cable Cutter (75250)

The GMP Ratcheting Cable Cutter is a small cutter that does a big job. It is designed especially for cutting communications cable up to 3 3/8 in. (85mm) in diameter. Because of their small size, they are perfect for cutting cable in tight spots like manholes, ditches or riser closets. While the handles are small, the ratcheting mechanism gives it the mechanical advantage it needs to make power cuts.

The cutting blades are made from precision ground, high alloy tool steel for long life, and a special hardening process helps keep the cutting edges sharp. To inhibit rust, the cutter head has a black oxide finish, and the handles are powder coated for durability and long life.

The cushioned hand grips have a textured surface to reduce fatigue and grip pressure, and a thumb button on the left handle allows the handles to open fully to advance more teeth per stroke — facilitating fast closing onto smaller diameter cables. Finally, the cutters are furnished with a full grain leather scabbard to protect the cutter head during storage.

The GMP 3 IN. Ratcheting Tel-Cutter (01819)

The GMP 3” Ratcheting Tel-cutter is a compact, one-handed, light weight ratcheting tool for cutting copper communications cable up to 3 inches (76mm) in diameter. Its design features make it an easy and effective tool to use. The cutter has a release lever to disengage the ratchet, allowing the blades to open even in mid-cut.

The tool features a rubber boot to lodge the stationary handle against your work surface, multiplying your manual effort. It also comes with a safety latch to lock the blades in a closed position for storage.

The GMP Texas Cutter (66250)

With its long 36 in. handles and big 3 3/8 in. blade opening, these rugged cutters definitely command respect. The handles give you the leverage you need to make clean cuts through even the thickest 1800 pair 24 AWG or 2700 pair 26 AWG lead or polyethylene-jacketed cable. If you don’t need to cut in tight spaces, it’s a valuable and cost efficient tool for the job that it does (and does well).

The GMP Cable Cutter 2/0 1 IN. (15304)

You’ll make clean, easy cuts through the heaviest jacket 2/0 AWG copper or aluminum and 100 pair 24 AWG cable with this economical cutter. This tool is the definition of simplicity with its precision-ground blades die cut from hardened steel — giving it a tough cutting surface that keeps its edge.

The contoured handles have a no-slip plastic covering to keep it firmly in hand, and at 8.75 in. long, it’ll fit comfortably into most tool pouches.

The GMP Tabbing Shears (08184)

Last but not least, the GMP Tabbing Shears are designed specifically for making longitudinal cuts in cable sheaths and metallic shields for placement of inner sheath bond clamps. The special alloy and hardening process used in manufacturing the GMP tabbing shears makes these the only ones to stand up to steel/aluminum shields.

The lower snout is rounded and thinly contoured to fit smoothly between the cable shield and the core wrap without damaging the conductors. For extra safety, the formed handle grips keep your hand from sliding forward as cutting progresses and a latch keeps the handles closed for storage. They’re an essential tool in telecommunication technician’s arsenal.
